Be sure to increase the production of the” love hormone”, it is useful for your heart health

A recent study by researchers from the US State University of Michigan found that oxytocin, also called the “love hormone”, helps to heal broken hearts in the literal sense of the word.

And that in the event that you suffer-God forbid – a heart attack, the presence of this hormone in your blood at the right time and in sufficient quantity will greatly benefit the regeneration of damaged cells, even the authors of the study recommended that oxytocin should be checked when suffering a heart injury.

The hormone of love

Our bodies normally produce oxytocin when we fall in love, which is why it has been called the “love hormone” or “hug hormone”, as it helps us bond more closely with our loved ones, enhances feelings of satisfaction, security and trust towards people we already care about, and this neurohormone is also known for generating pleasant emotions.

According to the website of the University “Harvard”, the pituitary gland releases oxytocin into the bloodstream through touching, listening to music, doing exercises, as well as marital relationship.

The main function of the hormone is to facilitate childbirth, oxytocin stimulates the uterine muscles to contract, and as soon as the baby is born, oxytocin helps to transfer milk from the ducts in the breast to the nipple and strengthen the bonds between mother and baby.

Oxytocin also helps protect the cardiovascular system from injury by lowering blood pressure and reducing inflammation, and also regulates ejaculation, sperm transport and testosterone production in males.

Healing Hearts

According to the LiveScience website, a study-published on September 30, 2022 in the journal “Frontiers in cell and Developmental Biology” – conducted on zebrafish and human cells showed that the hormone made by the brain may help heart tissue regenerate after injury, and that theoretically it could one day be used in the treatment of heart attacks.

The authors of the study also explained -in their press release published on the website of “EurekAlert” (eurekalert)- that this function was not expected within the functions of oxytocin, but it was confirmed at least in zebrafish, by stimulating stem cells derived from the outer layer of the heart (epicardium) to migrate to the middle layer (myocardium), which helps replace injured and dead heart muscle cells.

Early results in human cells also suggest that oxytocin can induce similar effects in humans, if they are given the hormone at the right time and in the right amount.

“Oxytocin is able to activate cardiac repair mechanisms in injured hearts in zebrafish and human cell cultures, which opens the door to potential new treatments for heart regeneration in humans,”says Dr. Aitor Aguirre-assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Michigan State University and senior author of the study in the press release.

As the authors of the study say-in their statement – Unfortunately, the production of stem cell-like cells is ineffective for the regeneration of the heart in humans under natural conditions.

But encouraging more epicardial cells to transform into myocardial cells in one way or another can help the heart rebuild itself after an injury.

Scientists chose a zebrafish for this experiment, due to its exceptional ability to regenerate organs, including the brain, retina, internal organs, bones and skin, and came to the conclusion that within 3 days after the zebrafish heart is injured, it increases the production of oxytocin up to 20-fold in the brain, which leads to the repair of dead or damaged heart cells.

The researchers of the study have decisively shown that oxytocin has a similar effect on human tissues in vitro. The researchers tested 14 other hormones released by our brains, but none of them were able to do what the hormone of love does.

How to increase the hormone of love

According to the Harvard website, it is difficult if oxytocin is given to depressed patients, for example, to produce good results due to the difficulty of the hormone’s infiltration through the blood-brain barrier, but there is a more successful way to enhance oxytocin naturally, which is to exercise, as well as listening to music or singing collectively, which increases bonding, and this is what a 2015 study of 4 singers found.

According to the website “Healthline” (healthline), the production of oxytocin in your blood can also be increased by:

  1. Practicing yoga: research since 2013 suggests that yoga may help increase oxytocin production.
  2. Getting a massage: a 2012 study of 95 adults found evidence that 15 minutes of massage by a family member helps people relax and increases oxytocin levels as well.
  3. Tell others how much you care: sharing your love and affection with people you care about helps increase your oxytocin hormone.
  4. Spending time with friends: spending quality time with friends helps to feel social support and makes you less isolated from the world.
  5. Meditation: practicing meditation daily can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and to produce oxytocin during your meditation, focus your mind on someone you care about.
  6. Cuddling or hugging: hugging and holding hands can do wonders, so take a few moments for a long hug with your husband or baby.
  7. Be generous: altruistic and generous behaviors can promote the release of oxytocin, give a gift to someone or do a kind act that brings happiness to him, this will make you feel happier.
