The authors of the study also explained -in their press release published on the website of “EurekAlert” (eurekalert)- that this function was not expected within the functions of oxytocin, but it was confirmed at least in zebrafish, by stimulating stem cells derived from the outer layer of the heart (epicardium) to migrate to the middle layer (myocardium), which helps replace injured and dead heart muscle cells.
Early results in human cells also suggest that oxytocin can induce similar effects in humans, if they are given the hormone at the right time and in the right amount.
“Oxytocin is able to activate cardiac repair mechanisms in injured hearts in zebrafish and human cell cultures, which opens the door to potential new treatments for heart regeneration in humans,”says Dr. Aitor Aguirre-assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Michigan State University and senior author of the study in the press release.

As the authors of the study say-in their statement – Unfortunately, the production of stem cell-like cells is ineffective for the regeneration of the heart in humans under natural conditions.

Scientists chose a zebrafish for this experiment, due to its exceptional ability to regenerate organs, including the brain, retina, internal organs, bones and skin, and came to the conclusion that within 3 days after the zebrafish heart is injured, it increases the production of oxytocin up to 20-fold in the brain, which leads to the repair of dead or damaged heart cells.
The researchers of the study have decisively shown that oxytocin has a similar effect on human tissues in vitro. The researchers tested 14 other hormones released by our brains, but none of them were able to do what the hormone of love does.
How to increase the hormone of love
According to the Harvard website, it is difficult if oxytocin is given to depressed patients, for example, to produce good results due to the difficulty of the hormone’s infiltration through the blood-brain barrier, but there is a more successful way to enhance oxytocin naturally, which is to exercise, as well as listening to music or singing collectively, which increases bonding, and this is what a 2015 study of 4 singers found.
